Overview
Spotspace is a parking spot finder app that helps users to find parking spots quickly & easily. The idea came from my experience in San Francisco, California where I often had trouble finding a parking space in the city. I also have seen other people have encountered the same problem. I created this case study, hoping to find effective solutions that could solve the problem.

KEY FEATURES
Problem Statement
Finding available parking spots is becoming harder with the progressing urbanization and population expansion. People are busy and have many priorities, thus a quick and easy way to solve everyday problems is crucial.
My challenge is to find possible solutions that enable users to find parking spots without hassles and make their lives easier.
DESIGN PROCESS
Research
User Survey
To gather insights into who my potential users are, and what problems they face when they search parking spots, I conducted a user survey. I received 20 responses, and these results allowed me to paint a clearer picture of the issues people have to face when they look for parking spots. I also learned how and when my potential users used other parking finder applications which helped me understand what kind of tools they found useful.
Competitive Analysis
To gain strategic insights into the features, functions, flows, and feelings of design solutions before making decisions about design strategy, I conducted competitor research on three well known parking finder apps in the marketplace.
Key findings in common features among the competitors
Booking and pre-paying to reserve a parking spot in advance.
Searching and comparing parking spots by distance & price.
Adding and setting up payment methods.
Simple and intuitive navigation system.
Affinity Diagram
I went through the responses on the survey and noted anything regarding participants’ needs, frustrations, pain points of searching for parking spaces in a city as well as relevant remarks about using a parking finder app. Once I finished organizing my notes, I began sorting them into groups of similar notes and gave each of those groups a label to see the patterns and insights.
Key Insights
People are concerned about the security of parking areas where they park.
Those that have used a parking finder app found the booking and payment systems are useful.
Finding the nearest parking spot from destinations is the common priority among drivers.
People want to know the availability of parking spaces and parking fees beforehand.
Define
Personas
To generate user empathy and determine who I’m creating my product, I created two user personas based on the user feedback I received from the user research survey.
Flowchart
Using user scenarios as a framing mechanism, I attempted to identify 3 main task flows a user would perform to accomplish their goals on the app. This helped me generate ideas for creative and innovative solutions.
Ideate
Sketches
Based on key findings from the user research, I started sketching out screens for the key user flows. This helped me get my ideas down on paper quickly and envision how the designs would look before moving further process.
